One page resume

Sunday, October 10th, 2004

I’ve always been a firm believer of the one-page resume. One piece of paper that tells you everything about me. However, 2 Microsoft recruiters blog about why that might not be a good idea in today’s workplace. They’re good reasons. This is coming from 2 ladies that receive thousands of resumes a month. I might have to change my mind about that.

Development / Test cycle

Saturday, October 9th, 2004

You’ll probably see a bunch of articles written by Larry Osterman here in my blog. I’d suggest reading anything he writes. This article talks about the latest push for Zero defects before writing new code, and why that *might* be a bad idea. He also references a Gamasutra article that is also interesting, from the standpoint of development in the game industry.

Joke of the day

Ok, this is really, really bad. But it’s quick, so read it.

Pya!
I’m not sure if this is supposed to be a game or what. Maybe someone can tell me what the point is…

3dfx memory lane

Friday, October 8th, 2004

I think I’ve seen this before, but the link came up again, so I thought I’d share.

Like em or not, 3dfx was the pioneer of 3d graphics hardware for PCs. They were able to convince the gaming public that they needed to buy a *2nd* video card for their machine just to play games. Not many companies are able to convince people to buy something for their computer that didn’t already come with it. Open up the computer? No chance. But 3dfx was able to do it. And look at the industry it spawned.
Here’s a little photo tribute to the 3dfx cards of the past. Check out the crazy concept cards near the end of their lifetime as a company.

Mr Potato Head

Friday, October 8th, 2004

This isn’t your kid’s Mr. Potato Head. I’m not quite sure what *is* the purpose of buying this thing. Do you put it on your mantle and show it off to people? I don’t understand…

Motherload
This of a cross between Dig-Dug and Mr. Driller, with a little bit of rpg elements (upgrading your vehicle as you go). Mindless fun.

Booh… Bah… ?

The BoohBah Zone (Thanks Regina!)

Just think of something almost more demented that the Teletubbies. This will keep you (oh, I mean your kids) occupied for hours! Turns out that these… things… were created by the same person as Teletubbies. Explains why there seems to be some sort of resemblance. I’ve never seen the boobahs on tv, probably a good thing.

Who did I see at USC?

Thursday, October 7th, 2004

So I’m taking a visit to the USC campus… I just work there after all, might as well see the place.

Over by the tommy trojan statue I see some guys surrounded by about 100 girls signing autographs. I have no idea who they are. Being just mildly curious, I take a sneak a look at one of the posters that a girl is carrying… It says “Hanson”… Hanson?? At USC? Wow… Shouldn’t they be out touring middle schools or high schools? I thought colleges would be out of their demographic. Or perhaps all of the teeny boppers that used to listen to them are all grown up and are now in college. Anyways… thought it was funny.

I *didn’t* get their autograph, btw… so don’t even ask.

File Systems

Monday, October 4th, 2004

I’ve been always interested in File Systems. Mostly the history. Can you believe that I wrote a technical paper in college comparing the current file systems of the day? (No, you don’t want to read it, trust me).

Here’s a blog article that links to a history comparison and some other great little tidbits of info. (A Google file system? wow) Not a lot of histoical info about the linux side of things though. He said he couldn’t find any. Anyone got some info they want to share?
