3dfx memory lane

Friday, October 8th, 2004

I think I’ve seen this before, but the link came up again, so I thought I’d share.

Like em or not, 3dfx was the pioneer of 3d graphics hardware for PCs. They were able to convince the gaming public that they needed to buy a *2nd* video card for their machine just to play games. Not many companies are able to convince people to buy something for their computer that didn’t already come with it. Open up the computer? No chance. But 3dfx was able to do it. And look at the industry it spawned.
Here’s a little photo tribute to the 3dfx cards of the past. Check out the crazy concept cards near the end of their lifetime as a company.

Mr Potato Head

This isn’t your kid’s Mr. Potato Head. I’m not quite sure what *is* the purpose of buying this thing. Do you put it on your mantle and show it off to people? I don’t understand…

Motherload
This of a cross between Dig-Dug and Mr. Driller, with a little bit of rpg elements (upgrading your vehicle as you go). Mindless fun.
